2022 Sandy Visual Art Show

Right after the Draper International Arts & Crafts Festival, my husband sent me a link from the Sandy Arts Guild about their annual Visual Art Show. It’s a 2-week long art exhibition at the Sandy Senior Center where they award prizes to artists in different categories.

I was still riding high from the two booths I had this summer, so I went ahead and submitted two of my original paintings: Corona Arch & Milky Way and Buckskin Gulch. This was yet another moment where I was grateful for my experience working as a picture framer years ago. I was able to cut custom mats for my paintings and make them look professionally framed. I was able to list both paintings for sale, and it gave me peace of mind to know that, on the HIGHLY UNLIKELY chance that someone buys one, they are framed beautifully.

My kids were more than thrilled to help me bring my two paintings to the show and help me get the paperwork together.

The opening of the show was last week and friends and family members of the artists were invited to attend where they announced the winners in each category. Categories were: oil & acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, 3D art, photography. They also gave awards to artists with disabilities who submitted artwork.

We went to the opening gala as a family and my oldest wanted to bet me $100 that I’d win 1st place in my category. I ended up winning 2nd place!

My painting of Buckskin Gulch took 2nd place in the watercolor category; which was a really awesome surprise. There were some really amazing paintings, in all of the categories.

It was really fun to walk around and look at all of the different art with my family. My kids scrutinized the watercolor painting that took 1st place (“Yours is way better, Mom!”). I spent a long time analyzing the intricate details of the painting that took 3rd place in watercolor.

Our mayor Monica Zoltanski (Sandy’s FIRST woman mayor!) and councilwoman Alison Stroud were there and I got to spend a few minutes with them talking about my artwork. Mayor Zoltanski told me about when she rode through Buckskin Gulch on horseback and it made ME want to do it too!

The evening was such a treat! I adored walking around and looking at all of the different artwork and I am planning to go back this week to look again.

While you’re there, fill out a paper listing your votes for People’s Choice Awards. Those winners will be announced at the end of this week. I wonder if there’s a cash award…

Samy and Leo Painting

My friend and taekwondo master Samery asked me if I’d recreate this photo of her with her husky, Leo in watercolor and I was more than thrilled to do it for her. Corona Arch is one of my favorite hikes in the Moab, UT area as is apparent with how many times I’ve painted it.

This photo proved to be an interesting challenge with the position of the sun and shadows. Samy and Leo are sitting in the shadow of the arch with the sun behind the arch itself, but the shadows have been brightened up considerably. I chose to scoot them forward a little so I could give them a nice cast shadow. This grounded them to the rock better than when I tried to put them in the shade on an early sketch.

Of course, then I was left with what to do with the arch itself with the sun right behind it. The arch should be much darker than it really is and the sun causing a flare on either side. Rather than figure out how to do this in watercolor, I just gave everything a rim light; the arch, Samy, and Leo.

There’s just something cool about a rim light and a cast shadow.

What do you think?

I still go back and forth on whether these were wise decisions and I have debated brightening up the sky in that space where the sun is supposed to be, but the end result is still something I’m happy with. I’ll cut a custom mat for it before giving it to Samy.

Watercolor Prints are Here!

I’m doing a trial run of selling watercolor prints. I ordered a few and I’ll list them for sale. If there is enough interest and I can get them shipped with little-to-no hiccups, then I will order more and in some larger sizes.

Right now I have these available to order as giclée prints. Giclée is a printing method that ensures vibrant color and fantastic detail using archival inks. These are printed on acid-free, archival paper that has a matte finish and a subtle watercolor texture. I’m really happy with the print quality.

I have decided that Corona Arch here won’t be available in any print larger than 8x8. The original painting is about 5x5 inches and when enlarged, the stars will start to look weird as they are enlarged too. Someday, I’ll repaint this on larger paper so it can make for a prettier print in bigger sizes.

What should I paint next?? I have a few pretty places on my list from the Uinta Mountains in Utah AND also a few spots in California. Stay tuned.

Here’s a rundown on them:

Two arches from Coyote Gulch in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, near Escalante, UT. I so want to go backpacking there next year!

Pioneer Arch at Pioneer Park and part of the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area. This park is right in St. George, UT and so much fun to play in. Loads of rocks to climb, a slot canyon for kids and thinner adults to shimmy through, and a pioneer cabin to explore.

Fisher Towers near Moab, UT is really stunning. I’ve heard it’s popular among rock climbers too.

This little waterfall lives on the Red Reef Trail inside Red Cliffs National Conservation Area close to Leeds, UT. It’s a fantastic trail any time of the year, but it’s really special when there’s water in the creek. I will probably paint a couple of other spots on this trail too, it’s so beautiful.

Corona Arch near Moab, UT. This arch lives on BLM land right outside the entrance to Arches National Park. I’ve been to Arches twice and haven’t been able to make it to this massive arch. I hope to next year!

Babylon Arch is the most recent sticker that is currently being printed right now. This is easily one of my favorite trails through gorgeous sandstone cliffs and little canyons. And then when you get to the arch, you’re greeted by lovely views of the Virgin River. It’s pretty awesome.

I’m really proud of how well these turned out and I plan to do at least two more to finish the series at eight stickers… or maybe 10. I haven’t decided yet. There is so much public land in Utah, I think I read that almost 40% of the state is public land; mostly in the south and western parts of the state. I’ve lived here nine years and I’ve only seen a fraction of what’s here.

Once I’m done with public lands paintings, I think I’ll move on to my favorite spots within National Parks. Or maybe I’ll do some of Utah’s state parks? I also have been thinking about making a coloring book that showcases my favorite hikes. Any suggestions?
